Desire Discrepancy

The Bridging Conversation

30 min
One partner wants sex more than the other
Resentment around initiation
Feeling rejected or pressured

Desire mismatch is the #1 reason couples come to sex therapy. This conversation isn't about fixing the gap - it's about understanding it together so you stop interpreting it as rejection or pressure.

Step 1 of 5

Agree on the frame

Before starting, both say: 'Neither of us is broken. We're trying to understand each other.' No solving tonight.

Step 2 of 5

Higher-desire partner shares first

Finish the sentence: 'When I want sex and you don't, the story I tell myself is ___.' Then: 'What I actually need is ___ (closeness? reassurance? release?).'

Step 3 of 5

Listener: reflect, don't defend

Repeat back what you heard. 'So when I'm not interested, you start to feel ___ and you really need ___.' No fixing, no explaining.

Step 4 of 5

Switch

Lower-desire partner shares: 'When you want sex and I don't, the story I tell myself is ___. What I actually need is ___ (space? affection without expectation? to not be the 'no' all the time?).'

Step 5 of 5

Find ONE small experiment

End by picking one small thing to try this week. Not a fix - an experiment. Like: 'Let's have non-sexual physical affection daily without it being a setup.'

Things to remember

  • This works best with a 30-minute timer. Stop when it dings.
  • If it gets heated, pause. Resume tomorrow.
  • The point isn't agreement - it's understanding.
